Roberta’s House Meditation Garden Groundbreaking!

Parks & People is honored to manage the design and build of the meditation garden for Roberta’s House in historic Midway!

Roberta’s House is a family grief support center that provides trauma-informed care and addresses grief as a public health service. Roberta’s House offers programming for all ages in order to address the needs of children and families who are grieving the death of a family member or significant person.

Roberta’s House grew from the memory of the late Julia Roberta March, through her children. Julia and her husband William C. March founded the March Funeral Home in Baltimore in 1957. Thanks in no small part to their commitment to providing dignified, affordable services to low income families, they were well known in their community for their compassion and giving spirit, serving thousands of families through the funeral home that they operated out of their small row- house.

Surprisingly enough, this location was almost turned into a parking lot. But, thankfully for the clients, staff, and neighborhood, it will instead be transformed into a beautiful, restorative garden.

The meditation garden will be an inclusive outdoor space that compliments the services currently provided by the center. The garden will include a wandering and spacious labyrinth, beautiful crushed granite walkways, a remembrance wall, Nature Sacred benches, a gazebo, and soothing landscaping native to the area. Concurrently, the amazing teams at Floura Teether and Nature Sacred are working to install a rooftop garden and reflection area.

Through this effort, Roberta’ House mission and services will be uplifted and strengthened by the meditative power of quality green space.

Please stay tuned this fall when we will hold the ribbon cutting ceremony for this gorgeous and impactful project, along with our invaluable partners Floura Teeter Landscape Architects, Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, Nature Sacred, and, of course, the wonderful staff of Roberta’s House!
