These renovations were made possible by a State of Maryland local bond initiative and the hard work of our staff, partners, and community members.

Our partners on the Gwynns Falls Trail

Thank you to our amazing partners, supporters, and community members for your dedication and desire to see Baltimore, and her green spaces, thrive.

History of the Gwynns Falls Trail

In 1991, Congress passed the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act which set aside special funding for recreational trails across the country. Excited by this bold initiative, Baltimore City Planners began prospecting locations for a new urban trail network within the city’s protected stream valleys. Thus, the Gwynns Falls Trail was born.

For the next decade, City Planners worked closely with the Trust for Public Land, among several other public and private partners, to design and implement a 15-mile trail along the Gwynns Falls stream valley. The trail became a promenade for West Baltimore, with organized community activities such as neighborhood walks, youth recreation, and an infamous Halloween experience.

Today, the Gwynns Falls Trail is a 22-mile continuous corridor of hiking and bicycling trails inside Baltimore, Maryland. The trail runs alongside and through 30 unique and historically important neighborhoods and through 10 unique and historically important parks in Baltimore City.

Parks & People and the Gwynns Falls Trail

Parks & People’s mission is to improve Baltimore through green space and education. In 2022 we began our work, as project manager in partnership with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks to ensure the Gwynns Falls Trail is beautiful, safe, and accessible.
